Colleen McCullough was an Australian writer whose work reached enormous popular audiences from the 1970s through the 2000s. Trained in neurophysiology, she worked in hospitals and as a researcher, including at the Yale School of Medicine, before devoting herself fully to writing. She published 25 novels across several genres—romance, mystery, and historical fiction—and became world‑famous for The Thorn Birds (1977), which sold more than 30 million copies and was adapted into a highly successful television miniseries.
Commercial success put McCullough in an internationally prominent position; she received honors in Australia, including being named one of the 100 National Living Treasures and appointment to the Order of Australia. Although her books enjoyed broad popular acceptance, they attracted relatively little academic attention and are generally classified as popular fiction.
After The Thorn Birds she moved to Norfolk Island, where she lived for the rest of her life and was actively involved in local affairs, advocating for the island’s culture and some degree of autonomy for its people. Her most ambitious work included the Masters of Rome series, an extensive venture into historical fiction set in ancient Rome, which cemented her reputation as an author with wide readership and international reach.
