Iolanda Margherita di Savoia was an Italian princess, the eldest child of King Vittorio Emanuele III and Queen Elena of Montenegro, known for combining an aristocratic life with sporting and cultural interests. She became noted as a horsewoman and swimmer from a young age, and her name was attached to local initiatives — clubs and societies were named for her while she was still a child. In 1919 Giacomo Puccini dedicated to her the Inno a Roma, a sign of her public visibility at the time.
Although once considered in dynastic marriage plans with European princes, Iolanda married of her own choice in 1923 to Count Giorgio Carlo Calvi di Bergolo, a cavalry officer; as a result she lost some royal privileges and accompanied her husband to Pinerolo and Turin. The couple had several children and maintained ties with the royal family even after the monarchy’s decline.
After the proclamation of the republic she accompanied her parents into exile in Alexandria, returning to Italy in the mid‑1950s and settling in Rome. In 1974 she published the memoir Paesaggi scomparsi. She died in 1986 and was buried in the monumental cemetery of Turin, leaving a legacy of moderate public presence and cultural engagement.
