Anne de Vere, born Anne Cecil, was a member of the English high nobility in the sixteenth century, known chiefly as the Countess of Oxford and as the daughter of Queen Elizabeth I’s chief adviser, William Cecil, 1st Lord Burghley. Well educated and polyglot—she spoke French and Latin, and possibly Italian—she received the learned instruction typical of a courtly household headed by a mother who was a translator and humanist. She married in 1571 to Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, a union celebrated with great pomp in the presence of the queen. The marriage experienced public crises—separations, accusations of infidelity, and reconciliations—and was embroiled in court scandals that affected the couple’s reputation. They had five children, among them Lady Elizabeth and Lady Susan, who later married into the higher nobility. Anne is also associated with elegiac compositions commemorating a son who died in childhood, though authorship of these pieces is disputed among scholars. She died young, at 31, in 1588, and was buried in Westminster Abbey; her death had a profound effect on her father, who recorded his deep personal grief. Anne’s legacy remains connected to the social and cultural role of learned women at the Elizabethan court and to the complex family dynamics linking power, culture, and politics.
