Conrad Gessner was a 16th-century Swiss naturalist and humanist whose work helped launch modern zoology. Trained as a physician, he was notable for his wide-ranging scholarship: beyond medicine and botany he compiled major works such as the Bibliotheca universalis (1545), an ambitious trilingual catalogue of authors and titles that earned him a reputation as a pioneer of bibliography.

His magnum opus, Historiae animalium (1551–1558), gathers descriptions and illustrations of land animals, birds, and fish, and became a standard reference for later naturalists. He also published treatises on botany, lexicons and editions of classical authors, and collected linguistic data in the Mithridates (1555).

Known for his excursions into the Swiss mountains in search of plants and natural specimens, Gessner combined field observation with learned scholarship. The influence of his work extended into the following century: botanical families were named after him and his methods of compilation and illustration shaped scientific practice.

He maintained ties with leading religious and academic figures in Zurich and with European universities where he studied and taught. He died in Zurich, leaving a body of texts that bridged botany, zoology and bibliography.
