Cornelius Vanderbilt I (Staten Island, May 27, 1794 — New York, January 4, 1877), also known by the nicknames The Commodore or Commodore Vanderbilt, was an American entrepreneur who built his fortune through the merchant marine and railroad construction, the patriarch of the Vanderbilt family. 

The name of Vanderbilt's railroad company was Accessory Transit Company.He created one of the first great fortunes - and business dynasties - in American history.

Ruthless in business, Cornelius Vanderbilt made few friends and many enemies in life. In his will, he disowned all his children, with the exception of William, who was as ruthless in business as his father and the only one who, Cornelius believed, would be capable of maintaining the business empire.

At the time of his death, at eighty-two years old, Cornelius Vanderbilt's fortune was estimated at 143 billion dollars. He left 138 billion to his son William in his will, but "only" 500 million dollars to each of his eight daughters. His wife received 500 million dollars in cash, the modest Vanderbilt residence in New York and 2,000,000 shares of the New York Central Railroad.

Vanderbilt gave little of his vast fortune to charity, leaving 1 million dollars, as promised, to Vanderbilt University and 50 thousand dollars to the Church of the Strangers in New York City. He lived modestly, leaving his descendants to build the Vanderbilt houses, which characterize America's Gilded Age
