Maria Francisca Dorothea Christina of Sulzbach was a countess of Palatinate-Sulzbach from the House of Wittelsbach who, by marriage, became Countess Palatine and Duchess of Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld. The daughter of Joseph Charles of Palatinate-Sulzbach and Countess Elisabeth Augusta Sophie of Neuburg, she belonged to a dynastic line whose ties helped shape successions in Bavaria and the Palatinate during the 18th century. She married in 1746 to Frederick Michael, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld, and had five children; among them Maximilian IV Joseph, who later became King Maximilian I of Bavaria, making Maria Francisca an ancestor of the Bavarian monarchy until 1918. Her offspring also allied with royal houses such as Saxony and Bavaria, underscoring the genealogical importance of her family. Her personal life had public repercussions: after an extramarital relationship that resulted in a pregnancy, she was removed from court and confined to convents for several years, returning only after her husband’s death. She died in Sulzbach in 1794; her local burial and the separate interment of her heart, later placed at the Altar of Our Lady of Altötting, reflect the dynastic customs and commemorative practices of the period.
