Peter I, known as Peter the Great (1672–1725), was ruler of Russia during a period of profound change. He ascended the throne while still young and, after overcoming dynastic struggles and the regency of his half-sister Sophia, consolidated power and took personal control of government, initiating wide-ranging reforms. Decisive in modernizing the country, he promoted the Westernization of military, administrative, and cultural institutions, encouraging the creation of a navy, reorganizing the army, and adopting European techniques and customs. His travels to Europe and the episodes in which he worked in shipyards and studied trades and sciences illustrate a pragmatic pursuit of technical knowledge and modern methods. On the military front, victory in the Great Northern War, highlighted by the Battle of Poltava (1709), secured Russia access to the Baltic and established it as a regional power. In 1721 he transformed the state into the Russian Empire and began to reign as emperor. His legacy is ambivalent: he left Russia more oriented toward Europe and equipped with modern state and military structures, while also centralizing authority and paving the way for a lasting autocratic administration.
