Dalton Trumbo was a prominent American screenwriter and novelist, known for both his literary output and successful Hollywood screenplays. The author of notable novels such as Johnny Got His Gun, which won the National Book Award, Trumbo also wrote — often under pseudonyms — influential film scripts including Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, Roman Holiday (later recognized with a posthumous Oscar), and Spartacus, the latter instrumental in breaking the blacklist that had excluded him from the industry. A member of the Hollywood Ten, Trumbo refused to testify before the congressional committee investigating alleged communist infiltration of the film industry, a stance that led to a conviction for contempt, imprisonment, and years on the blacklist. During that period he worked abroad and toiled under fictitious names; despite this he received recognition, including an Oscar for The Brave One credited to a pseudonym. His life included political activity associated with the Communist Party USA in the 1940s, influences of which appear in his work, and personal controversies such as the later-regretted disclosure of correspondence. Rehabilitated in the 1960s, he was readmitted to the writers' guild and began receiving official credits on major productions through the 1970s. Trumbo’s legacy encompasses both his literary and cinematic work and his stance against political censorship in Hollywood, making him a central figure in debates over freedom of expression, the role of intellectuals, and the history of the American film industry.
