James Danforth Quayle is an American politician of the Republican Party, best known for serving as the 44th Vice President of the United States (1989–1993) on the ticket with George H. W. Bush. Before becoming vice president, Quayle represented the state of Indiana in the House of Representatives (1977–1981) and in the Senate (1981–1989), building a legislative career noted for support of free-market policies, deregulation, and supply-side economics. A law graduate of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, he served in the Indiana Army National Guard. During his vice presidency he chaired the National Space Council and made official visits to dozens of countries, while also attracting public attention for remarks the press treated as gaffes. After the Bush–Quayle ticket’s defeat in 1992, he published the memoir Standing Firm (1994), entered the private sector, and remained active in Republican Party contests, including serving as an elector and as an adviser in subsequent presidential campaigns. His public legacy combines the institutional role of vice president with continued involvement in party politics and the business sector.
