Dana Carvey is an American comedian and actor whose career gained prominence as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL) from 1986 to 1993. At the show he helped restore its audience with memorable characters — including the Church Lady, Garth Algar (from Wayne’s World) and Hans — and was the main driver of its political satire and notable impersonations, notably of George H. W. Bush and Ross Perot. His work on the series earned five consecutive Emmy nominations and one win in 1993. In film, Carvey appeared in popular comedies such as Wayne’s World (and its sequel), Moving, Opportunity Knocks, Trapped in Paradise and The Master of Disguise. He also produced and wrote for television, and his influence helped launch careers through projects like The Dana Carvey Show, which introduced talents such as Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. Known for his improvisational style and comic characters, Carvey alternated periods of high exposure with stretches of withdrawal to prioritize his family. He returned occasionally to the public eye and to SNL, including appearances in 2024, and remains regarded as a reference point in American television comedy of recent decades.
