Daniel Chester French was an American sculptor active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose work held a central place in the United States’ public art. He became known for the monumental realism of pieces such as The Minute Man (1874), installed in Concord, Massachusetts, and above all for the imposing statue of Abraham Lincoln (1920) in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. His public figures—statues, memorials, and reliefs—adorned squares, universities, and government buildings, helping to define American civic iconography. Trained in the United States and in Florence, he collaborated with architects such as Henry Bacon and belonged to important artistic institutions: he was a founding member of the National Sculpture Society and the American Academy in Rome, and he served on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. He received domestic and international awards and honors, including the French Legion of Honor and various exhibition medals. French’s legacy remains visible in works spread across cities such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, as well as in his summer studio, Chesterwood, preserved as a historic site. His body of work influenced generations of sculptors and established him as a touchstone in the American monumental repertoire.
