Daniel Ellsberg was an American military analyst and economist best known for releasing the Pentagon Papers in 1971. While working at the RAND Corporation and later for the Pentagon, he exposed confidential documents that detailed the U.S. decision-making process in the Vietnam War, sparking wide political controversy and debates about governmental responsibility and freedom of the press. Charged under the Espionage Act, the charges against him were dropped in 1973 due to government misconduct in obtaining evidence.

Beyond his role as a whistleblower, Ellsberg contributed to decision theory with the paradox that bears his name, challenging assumptions of expected subjective utility. Over his life he voiced strong criticisms of U.S. nuclear policy, set out in books such as The Doomsday Machine, in which he warned of the catastrophic risks of nuclear war and of delegating authority over retaliation.

Recognized for his activism, he received the Right Livelihood Award in 2006, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and helped found initiatives promoting press transparency. His legacy combines intellectual influence, civil courage, and a lasting impact on public debates about security, ethics, and democracy.
