Louis-Joseph Xavier François, known as the Dauphin of France, was the eldest son and heir of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette until his premature death. Born in 1781, his arrival changed the line of succession and had political repercussions at court, displacing the Count of Provence — the future Louis XVIII — as presumptive heir. Raised under close royal supervision, he received an education tailored for rulership and was described by contemporaries as intelligent, affable, and showing authoritarian tendencies consistent with his rank. From an early age his health was fragile: he underwent variolation and suffered recurrent fevers, later developing signs of spinal involvement. Court physicians subsequently diagnosed vertebral caries and tuberculosis, a condition that worsened despite care and treatment attempts. In 1789, already seriously ill, he was moved to Meudon in hopes of recovery, but died on 4 June of that year at seven and a half years old. The dauphin’s death had a deep personal impact on the royal family and resonated with public opinion on the eve of the Revolution. His body was buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis and his heart placed in the Chapel of the Hearts at Val-de-Grâce. Louis-Joseph’s short life is frequently mentioned in works about the end of the Ancien Régime, symbolizing both dynastic fragility and the family tragedy that preceded the revolutionary upheaval.
