David Baltimore was an American molecular biologist and academic administrator, noted for discoveries that transformed modern molecular biology. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1975, at age 37, for identifying reverse transcriptase and clarifying how tumor-causing viruses interact with the genetic material of cells—a finding fundamental to the understanding of retroviruses.

Over his career, Baltimore taught and trained generations of researchers and held leadership positions at leading institutions: he directed the Whitehead Institute (1982–1990) and served as president of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) from 1997 to 2006. In 2008 he was president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

His scientific work spanned immunology, virology, cancer research, biotechnology and recombinant DNA, and earned numerous awards beyond the Nobel, including the U.S. National Medal of Science. Baltimore’s legacy includes both conceptual advances in molecular genetics and broad educational influence through his students and collaborators.
