David Garnett was a British writer and editor associated with the Bloomsbury Group, best known for the novel Lady into Fox, which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1922. The son of Constance Garnett, a translator of Russian literature, and Edward Garnett, he built a literary and editorial career that included cofounding the Nonesuch Press and running a bookshop near the British Museum in the 1920s.
In addition to fiction, Garnett worked as a translator, editor of literary correspondence, and author of memoirs and autobiographies, leaving important works such as Never Be a Bookseller and the autobiographical trilogy The Golden Echo, The Flowers of the Forest and The Familiar Faces. His career was closely linked with literary and artistic figures of his time, and he took an active part in the British intellectual circles from the early to mid‑20th century.
In his personal life he was noted for intimate ties to members of the Bloomsbury circle and for a notable marriage to Angelica Garnett, producing descendants who remained connected to the family’s legacy. He spent his final years in France, where he died in 1981, leaving an editorial and literary legacy recognized by critics and by British cultural history.
