David Vaughan Icke is a British writer and speaker known for promoting conspiracy theories since the early 1990s. Before that, he had a public career as a professional footballer—playing as a goalkeeper—and as a sports journalist and presenter for the BBC, and he also served as national spokesman for the Green Party of England and Wales. From 1990 onward, Icke began publishing and giving lectures in which he sets out a worldview that blends spirituality with critiques of alleged authoritarian structures. He is the author of around twenty books, among them works that articulate his central ideas about a “Global Elite” and secret societies that, he claims, control the world. One of the most notorious theses associated with Icke is the existence of a manipulative elite, including references to nonhuman or “reptilian” beings, a theme that provoked wide public controversy and condemnation in several countries. His rhetoric mixes political denunciation, conspiratorial interpretations and esoteric elements, which has earned him both followers and harsh criticism from the press and researchers. Overall, Icke established himself as an influential figure in the international conspiracy-theory circuit, leaving a legacy defined by the systematic dissemination of disputed ideas and by an ability to draw audiences to his talks and publications.
