Dee Dee Bridgewater is an American jazz singer and longtime artistic figure, recognized both for her singing and her acting. Her career began in the late 1960s when she joined rhythm-and-blues bands and became part of the Thad Jones–Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra in New York, performing alongside names such as Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie and Dexter Gordon. Her versatility led her to Broadway: in 1975 she won the Tony Award for her acting debut in The Wiz, a production that also won the Grammy for Best Musical.
Over the following decades Bridgewater established herself as a leading interpreter of the vocal jazz repertoire, most notably with the album Dear Ella (1997), which earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, in addition to other nominations. She performed at major international festivals such as Monterey, Montreux and San Francisco, and maintained a regular presence on tour and in recordings.
Living part-time in Paris since the mid-1980s, she broadened her international activity and collaborated with musicians such as Horace Silver, resulting in tribute recordings and live projects. Offstage, she also serves as a FAO/UN ambassador on agricultural issues, adding institutional recognition to her artistic record.
Her career has combined stage, studio and cultural activism, leaving a lasting influence on contemporary jazz singing.
