Denis Diderot was a French philosopher, art critic, and writer, a central figure of the Enlightenment and cofounder and editor-in-chief of the Encyclopédie. His editorial direction turned the project into a pioneering collective work by integrating signed contributions and addressing the mechanical arts, becoming an intellectual reference that anticipated debates that would feed into the French Revolution. Diderot wrote roughly 7,000 articles and, despite religious and political controversies that led to censorship, remained at the helm of the publication until the mid-1760s.

Alongside his editorial work, he produced fiction and essays — including Les Bijoux indiscrets — and plays that sustained his reputation during his lifetime. Many of his most original plays and important philosophical writings were published only posthumously, such as Jacques le Fataliste and Rameau’s Nephew.

Diderot’s life also reflects financial difficulties and limited institutional recognition; his circumstances improved when Empress Catherine II of Russia purchased his library and provided financial support, enabling intellectual exchanges that expanded his sphere of activity. He is remembered today for his decisive role in circulating critical thought and promoting encyclopedic knowledge.
