Derek Fordjour is an American interdisciplinary artist of Ghanaian descent whose practice includes painting, collage, video/film, and sculpture. He graduated from Morehouse College, holds a master’s in Arts Education from Harvard and an MFA from Hunter College, and also works in academia, having held the Alex Katz Chair at Cooper Union and served as core critic at the Yale School of Art. Fordjour’s work often uses sports imagery, crowds, and newspaper clippings—notably pages from the Financial Times—as metaphors for inequality, vulnerability, and processes of individuation. Projects such as the Shelter series, created during the pandemic lockdown, examine security and confinement simultaneously; other exhibitions explore the “gamification” of social structures. His work has been shown at major institutions including the Whitney Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and the Nasher Museum of Art, and is held in public collections such as the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Brooklyn Museum, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and LACMA. He has received notable grants and residencies and completed public commissions, including a permanent installation for New York’s transit authority.
