Richard Totten Button was a central figure in American figure skating in the postwar era, recognized for both his titles and technical innovations. He won two Olympic gold medals (1948 and 1952) and five consecutive World Championships (1948–1952), in addition to multiple national titles, establishing himself as the leading male skater of his time. Button became known for bringing a higher degree of athleticism to the sport: he was the first to land the double Axel in competition (1948) and the first to complete a triple jump—the triple loop (1952). He also created the variation known as the flying camel (originally the “Button camel”), expanding the technical and artistic vocabulary of programs. Considered part of what historians call the “American school” of skating, Button introduced a more athletic approach in contrast to European tradition. His competitive career and technical innovations influenced subsequent generations and left a lasting impact on the technical and aesthetic development of figure skating.
