Richard Douglas Fosbury was an American athlete whose technical invention transformed the modern high jump. A gold medalist at the 1968 Olympics, he became famous for introducing the “Fosbury flop”: a curved approach run followed by a backward clearance of the bar, which lowers the jumper’s center of mass in flight and allowed higher clearances. The technique proved so effective that, after his victory in Mexico, it was adopted almost universally by competitors in the event. Fosbury began experimenting while still in high school in Medford, Oregon, adjusting his approach and taking advantage of the spread of foam padding in landing pits, which made landing on the back feasible and safe. In high school and at university he refined the J-shaped approach run and the body position that define the flop. After his athletic career he remained connected to the Olympic movement and to sports administration, serving on boards and taking part in local initiatives. He also entered local politics in Idaho, being elected Blaine County commissioner in 2018. His technical legacy remains central to athletics, having permanently changed how the high jump is contested.
