Richard Joseph “Dick” McGuire was one of the leading point guards of 1950s American basketball. He played 11 seasons in the NBA (1949–1960), eight with the New York Knicks and three with the Detroit Pistons, and was known for his court vision and playmaking ability. In his rookie season he led the league in assists with what was then a record 386 passes, and he ranked among the top ten assist men in ten of his eleven seasons.

Recognized for his consistency as a floor general, McGuire was a seven‑time All‑Star (1951, 1952, 1954–1956, 1958, 1959) and made the All‑NBA Second Team in 1951. After ending his playing career he served as player‑coach for the Pistons (1959–60) and remained their head coach through 1963; he later coached the Knicks for three seasons beginning in 1965, compiling a coaching record of 197 wins and 260 losses.

His legacy was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 and the retirement of the Knicks’ No. 15 in 1992. McGuire is also remembered for his family’s basketball tradition: his brother Al and his nephew Allie also achieved prominence in the sport, making theirs one of the most notable lineages in American basketball.
