Richard Gregory “Dick” Tuck was an American political consultant and strategist best known for his pranks and behind-the-scenes maneuvers in election campaigns from the 1950s through the 1970s. He worked as an advance man and campaign operative, taking part in episodes aimed at unsettling opponents—most notably Richard Nixon—through theatrical devices and public practical jokes that received wide press coverage and became part of American political lore. Tuck worked on campaigns for figures such as Helen Gahagan Douglas and served as an adviser to Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 campaign; he was present at critical moments, including in the transportation of Kennedy after the Los Angeles assassination. His best-remembered stunts include the Chinatown episode during the 1962 campaign and theatrical actions after the first Kennedy–Nixon debate, which underscored his taste for media effects. Although Tuck claimed many of the exploits, several are disputed or denied, and he himself admitted to having fabricated stories to some degree. Nonetheless, his name remained linked to the use of satire and public embarrassment as an electoral tactic, shaping modern perceptions of the role of spectacle in political campaigns.
