Richard Albert “Dick” Van Arsdale was a professional NBA basketball player best known for his time with the Phoenix Suns, where he became one of the franchise’s earliest emblematic figures and earned the nickname “Original Sun.” A graduate of Indiana University, he played shooting guard and was a leading scorer and rebounder in college—earning All‑American and Academic All‑American honors—and was a member of the U.S. team that won gold at the 1965 Universiade. Selected by the New York Knicks in the 1965 draft, he made the All‑Rookie Team in his first NBA season and, after being chosen by the Suns in the 1968 expansion draft, received three All‑Star Game selections (1969–1971) and appeared on defensive teams, while keeping a high free‑throw percentage throughout his career. His number 5 jersey was retired by the Phoenix Suns. After retiring in 1977, Van Arsdale served in executive roles—including vice president and general manager—worked as an interim coach and as a radio and television commentator. Off the court, he collaborated with his twin brother Tom on artistic projects promoting messages of tolerance. He died in 2024, leaving a durable place in Suns history and in Indiana college basketball.
