Dilip Kumar, born Muhammad Yusuf Khan, was one of the central figures of modern Hindi cinema, with a career that spanned more than five decades. An icon of Bollywood’s so‑called golden age, he became known for dramatic roles that earned him the nickname “Tragedy King” and for popularizing a more restrained, introspective style of acting akin to method techniques. Over his career he appeared in roughly 57 films, many of them box‑office hits and cultural landmarks, including Andaz, Devdas, Madhumati, Naya Daur, Mughal‑e‑Azam and Gunga Jumna. His versatility let him move between profound tragedies and lighter parts, helping several productions achieve both artistic esteem and commercial success. Officially recognized, he received major honors such as the Padma Bhushan (1991), the Padma Vibhushan (2015) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1994). He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha and was awarded Pakistan’s Nishan‑e‑Imtiaz, underscoring his transnational legacy.
