Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich was one of the most influential Soviet composers of the twentieth century, whose work gained international recognition after the premiere of his First Symphony (1926). A pianist and composer, he became known for combining diverse techniques—from neoclassicism to Mahlerian influences—and for a musical language characterized by sharp contrasts, grotesque elements and an ambiguous tonal palette. His career unfolded under ongoing tension with Soviet authorities: after early success, the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk received official condemnation in 1936 and, in 1948, his work was targeted by the cultural campaign of the Zhdanov Decree, with lasting professional consequences. Even so, Shostakovich held public and institutional positions, serving as a member of the Supreme Soviet and as president of the RSFSR Union of Composers, and he received state honors. His output includes fifteen symphonies, six concertos, extensive chamber music (including 15 string quartets), works for piano and music for theatre and film, demonstrating a remarkable stylistic range and productivity. Critical attention to his music intensified after his death, prompting extensive scholarly debate about the relationship between his work and the political context in which he lived.
