Dolly Wilde (Dorothy Ierne Wilde) was an Anglo‑Irish socialite known for her charm, wit and presence in the literary salons of Paris between the wars. A cultural heir to the circle that surrounded Oscar Wilde, she was better known for her brilliant conversation than for any published work, becoming a central figure in the city’s cosmopolitan and bohemian circles. She served in World War I as an ambulance driver in France and, after the war, was involved in notable romantic relationships, including a long liaison with writer and salon host Natalie Clifford Barney. Her personal life mixed sexual freedom with addiction: she was openly lesbian and suffered episodes of alcoholism and drug dependence that marked her life. Although admired for her vivacity and storytelling, she never established an independent literary career; her known contributions are occasional translations and lively letters exchanged with friends. In her final years she declined surgery for breast cancer and, with the Nazi occupation, returned to England, where she died in 1941 under circumstances that are not fully clear. Dolly Wilde’s legacy remains that of a salon muse and conversationalist of Parisian life, a symbol of a generation that lived amid provocation, glamour and personal tragedy.
