Donald Mills was the lead vocalist of the famed vocal quartet The Mills Brothers, an American group that achieved enormous success during the eras of vocal jazz and traditional pop. Together with his brothers, Donald contributed to a repertoire that produced more than 2,000 recordings and sales exceeding 50 million copies, including the No. 1 single "Paper Doll" (1943). The group also accumulated numerous certifications and was recognized for its enduring influence on the musical landscape. The Mills Brothers were pioneers in the representation of Black artists in the media: in 1930 they became the first Black performers to have a program on a national radio network, which broadened their exposure and opened doors for African-American artists. They were known for their distinctive technique of imitating instruments with their voices, accompanied by a guitar that provided the harmonic foundation. Beyond record success and appearances in films and radio programs, the quartet set professional and aesthetic standards in American popular music from the 1930s through the 1950s. The legacy of Donald Mills and his brothers endures in the history of vocal group singing and in their influence on subsequent generations of vocalists.
