Doris Lessing was a British writer of wide-ranging achievement whose work includes novels, short stories, plays, poetry and biographies. She rose to prominence with books such as The Grass Is Singing and The Golden Notebook, which established her as a central voice in discussions of women’s condition, psychology and the social tensions of the twentieth century. Her fiction crosses styles — from social realism informed by leftist concerns to intimate psychological analysis and onward to visionary science fiction. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2007 for her role as an “epic storyteller of the female experience” and for her ability to scrutinize a fractured civilization. The prize underscored both her literary influence and the public recognition of a long, multifaceted career. Public interventions and controversies marked her life: she was banned in Rhodesia and South Africa for her activism against apartheid and took part in campaigns for nuclear disarmament. In her later years she published the ambitious Canopus in Argos series, which blends science fiction and Sufi elements to explore themes of colonization, social evolution and galactic mythology — a project she regarded as among the most important of her work. Her legacy remains present in literary criticism and in studies of gender, politics and contemporary narrative forms.
