Dottie Frazier was a pioneer of scuba diving in the United States, recognized for opening the way for women’s participation in underwater practice and commerce. A certified instructor since 1955, she became the first woman to work as a scuba instructor in the country and founded the Penguin Dive Shop, the first woman‑owned dive shop. Her life is recorded in the autobiography Trailblazer: The Extraordinary Life of Diving Pioneer, Dottie Frazier. Leading practical innovations, Frazier developed early neoprene suits for women marketed as Penguin Suits, adapting equipment and clothing to women’s needs in a technical field then dominated by men. In the 1940s she was already teaching breath‑hold diving and later built a family diving community by creating the Aqua Families club for parents and children to dive together. Recognized for her contributions, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame in 2000 and received the Historical Diving Society’s Diving Pioneer Award in 2019. Her influence endures in a legacy of inclusion, instruction, and design aimed at recreational and professional diving.
