Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen was a Norwegian polar explorer whose career helped define the era of scientific exploration of the Arctic and Antarctica. Born into a shipowning family, he trained at a nautical school and served as first officer on the Belgian Antarctic Expedition (1897–1899), an experience that consolidated his seamanship and scientific skills. Amundsen became known for adopting Indigenous survival techniques—such as dog‑sleds and appropriate clothing—which proved crucial in his campaigns. From 1903 to 1906 he commanded the passage of the Northwest Passage aboard the Gjøa, conducting mapping and magnetic studies and spending winters at Gjoa Haven; this work advanced geographic knowledge and the understanding of magnetic pole movement. In 1911 he led the expedition that reached the South Pole on 14 December, employing rigorous logistical planning and methods that gave him an advantage over rival expeditions. He later turned his attention to aviation and polar air crossings, taking part in the dirigible Norge flight to the North Pole in 1926. He disappeared in June 1928 during a rescue mission in the Arctic; his legacy endures in the history of polar exploration, recognized for the combination of nautical skill, technical innovation, and scientific spirit.
