Frits Zernike was a Dutch physicist whose career was marked by contributions to optics and coherence theory. A professor of theoretical physics in Groningen, he produced fundamental work on opalescence in gases and, in 1914, co-formulated the Ornstein–Zernike equation, important in the theory of fluids and critical points.

His international recognition came in 1953 with the Nobel Prize in Physics for demonstrating the phase-contrast method and inventing the phase-contrast microscope—an instrument that revolutionized the study of transparent materials and living cells without the need for staining. At the same time, Zernike proposed an efficient representation of optical aberrations through the polynomials now bearing his name, which allow different orders of defects in imaging systems to be separated and quantified.

From the mid-20th century onward, Zernike polynomials became standard in optical design, metrology, and image analysis. In addition, his simplified version of the Van Cittert theorem, known as the Van Cittert–Zernike theorem, advanced the study of coherence of partially coherent light sources, leaving a lasting legacy in theoretical and applied optics.
