Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot was one of the most influential French painters of the 19th century, known primarily for his contribution to landscape painting and for moving between classical tradition and realism. Born into a wealthy family of merchants, he began his career painting portraits of acquaintances — works that already showed skill and sensitivity to the figure — but his reputation was established by his landscapes. After a productive stay in Italy (where he studied light and composition in the manner of Claude Lorrain), Corot developed a style marked by tonal clarity, serenity and a “truth of the moment” in direct observation of nature. His small canvases and sketches painted outdoors rendered rural and urban scenes with structural rigor and luminous subtlety. Back in France, he abandoned academicism for a more realistic style; works such as The Forest of Fontainebleau and The Little Shepherd drew critical attention and earned him distinctions such as the Cross of the Legion of Honor. His influence extended to later generations of landscape painters, leaving a legacy of observational precision and tonal refinement that helped shift landscape painting from the classical to the modern.
