Doyle Edward Nix was an American football player who played as a defensive back in the 1950s and 1960s. A graduate of Southern Methodist University, he was a regular starter and played on the college team alongside future Pro Football Hall of Famers, taking on roles on both defense and offense at times during his collegiate career. Drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1955, Nix had a promising start as a cornerback, recording five interceptions in his rookie season. He paused his career for two years to serve in the United States Air Force and returned to professional football in trades that brought him to the Washington Redskins. With the arrival of the American Football League, he joined its early rosters: he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960 and contributed four interceptions in the inaugural season, helping the team reach the league championship game. In 1961 he played for the Dallas Texans, adding three more interceptions. His career was marked by moves between the NFL and AFL during a period of expansion and consolidation of professional football in the United States, leaving records as an interception scorer and as a member of historic franchises in the early AFL era.
