Sophie Charlotte Augusta of Wittelsbach was a duchess of Bavaria by birth and became Duchess of Alençon when she married Prince Ferdinand of Orléans. A member of the broad European dynastic network, she was sister to figures such as Empress Sissi and was related by family ties to monarchs of Austria, Mexico and various European kingdoms, a circumstance that shaped her social role within the 19th‑century high nobility. Known for her beauty and artistic talents—particularly as a pianist and singer—Sophie attracted intense public attention when she became engaged to King Ludwig II of Bavaria; that engagement was later broken. Married in 1868, she had two children; her married life alternated between happy periods and episodes of deep melancholy, with recurrent mental health problems that affected her life and activities. In later life she devoted herself to charitable works and joined the Third Order of Saint Dominic, taking the religious name Maria Magdalena. She died in 1897 in the tragic fire at the Bazar de la Charité, an event that claimed many victims and marked her legacy for both her dedication to charitable causes and her dramatic end.
