Duque da Baviera Philipp Wilhelm

Philipp of Bavaria was a member of the high Catholic nobility at the end of the 16th century, known for his brief ecclesiastical career. A son of William V of Bavaria and Renata of Lorraine, he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Ingolstadt and held canonries in important cathedral chapters including Cologne, Mainz, Salzburg and Trier. Although attached to the regular clergy, he never received holy orders.

In 1592 he was elected and later confirmed as administrator and then bishop of Regensburg, a post that enjoyed papal approval and in which his administrative duties were supported by aides appointed by the Holy See. In 1596 he was created a cardinal deacon, a distinction he did not ratify in Rome, since he never personally received the cardinal’s biretta or his diaconal church.

Besides administrative work, Philipp was noted for public preaching, as at the consecration of the Jesuit church in Munich, where he delivered a homily praised for its learning. He died prematurely after a fall from a horse at the family castle in Dachau and was buried in the collegiate church of St. Mary in Munich.
