Alfonso, Duke of Anjou and Cádiz, was a member of the Spanish royal family and a prominent figure in twentieth-century dynastic movements. A grandson of Alfonso XIII, he spent his life between exiles and returns, educated in Switzerland and later in Spain, where he allied himself with the regime of Francisco Franco. In 1972 Franco granted him the Spanish title Duke of Cádiz and the dignity of Grandee of Spain, after which he occupied a public role close to the core of Francoist power. Considered by some Spanish monarchists as a legitimist heir and claimed by supporters as the legitimist pretender to the extinct French throne (recognized by them as Alfonso II), Alfonso pursued dynastic claims both within the Carlist/legitimist tradition and amid the succession disputes between Bourbon branches. His activity included appointing monarchical advisers and taking part in ceremonies connected to the memory of the French royal line. Alfonso’s private and political life was marked by tragic episodes and controversies: a serious road accident in 1984 that claimed the life of one of his sons and a legal suit brought by another French dynastic branch over his use of titles and heraldic symbols. These events, together with his negotiations with Franco and involvement in dynastic disputes, place his legacy within the postwar history of European monarchies and the complex Bourbon successions.
