Aimone di Savoia-Aosta was a member of the Italian royal family and a naval officer, known for his military career, Himalayan explorations, and a brief, controversial link to the Croatian throne during World War II. Born into the prominent House of Savoy, he distinguished himself as an aviator and received decorations for service in the First World War; in the 1930s he took part in Karakoram expeditions alongside Ardito Desio, focusing on scientific research under harsh conditions. Raised to the nominal title of King of Croatia as Tomislav II in 1941, his claim was essentially symbolic: he never governed or set foot in the country, even declining coronation because of disagreements over the annexation of Dalmatia. With the change in the war’s course and Italy’s capitulation in 1943, his position was nullified and he remained ambiguous about any formal abdication. After the war, Aimone held senior naval posts, lost his dynastic status with the fall of the Italian monarchy, and spent his later years in exile in Argentina, where he died. His legacy combines military service, exploratory activity, and a dynastic episode that illustrates the complex interplay of monarchy and politics during the global conflict.
