William of Brunswick-Lüneburg, called the Younger (1535–1592), was a German noble who governed the Principality of Lüneburg as Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg from 1559 until his death. In his early years of rule he shared authority with his brother Henry of Dannenberg, reflecting the customary practice of dividing family domains among members of the ducal house. A son of Duke Ernest I and Duchess Sophie of Mecklenburg, William belonged to a dynastic network that connected him to the leading German houses of the period, including Lüneburg, Mecklenburg and Brandenburg, which strengthened his political position within the sixteenth-century Holy Roman Empire. In 1561 he married Princess Dorothea of Denmark, an alliance that consolidated cross‑border ties between the Nordic and German courts. The marriage produced numerous children, several of whom took up secular and ecclesiastical offices or forged marital alliances important for succession and regional politics. William’s reign was characterized by dynastic continuity and the transmission of the title to his sons, who in subsequent decades occupied the duchies and principalities derived from Lüneburg, thereby shaping the region’s political configuration in the years preceding the Thirty Years’ War.
