Filipe of Naples and Sicily, Duke of Calabria, was a member of the Bourbon royal house and the eldest son of Charles (later Charles III of Spain) and Maria Amalia of Saxony. Born in Portici, he spent his childhood at the Neapolitan court and held the traditional title of heir to the Kingdom of Naples, although his public life was limited by serious developmental and health problems from childhood. When the matter of succession became pressing after his father's accession to the Spanish throne in 1759, a medical and legal committee assessed his capacity to rule and declared him incapable, which led to his removal from the line of succession and replacement by his younger brothers. The royal family sought to keep his condition discreet, ensuring he remained removed from political life and lived under supervision within the palaces. Contemporary accounts emphasize a paternal form of care, affectionate visits from his siblings, and a life confined to the private spaces of the court with only occasional public appearances. Filipe died at the age of thirty of smallpox and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Chiara in Naples. His case illustrates the dynastic and medical measures of the eighteenth century toward an heir deemed incapable in European monarchies.
