Fernando, an infante of Portugal, was the son of King Manuel I and Queen Maria of Aragon and Castile. Styled Duke of Guarda and Trancoso and lord of Abrantes, he received the incomes of several towns and was part of the Portuguese high nobility in the early 16th century. In 1530 he married Guiomar Coutinho, heiress to the houses of Marialva and Loulé, a union arranged by King João III that reinforced aristocratic alliances.
Although his life was short—he died in 1534 and was initially buried in Abrantes, his remains later transferred to the Jerónimos Monastery—he was notable for his interest in letters and history. He gathered and commissioned copies of chronicles and sponsored the creation of an illustrated genealogical tree that sought to trace lineage from Noah to his father, King Manuel; this project involved artists and illuminators from Flanders.
His activity as a cultural patron and his involvement in genealogical and historiographical projects are his principal known legacy, reflecting the Renaissance taste for scholarship and documentary affirmation of noble origins.
