Carlos de Bourbon, who styled himself Duke of Madrid and Count of la Alcarria, was a central figure of Spanish Carlism in the late nineteenth century. The son of João de Bourbon e Bragança and Maria Beatrix of Austria-Este, he was raised in a European dynastic milieu and early on identified with dynastic conservatism, in contrast to his father’s liberal tendencies. He married twice and had five children, among them Jaime, who succeeded him as the Carlist claimant.

When he assumed Carlist leadership in 1868, Carlos sought to revive the movement amid the crisis of the Isabeline regime. His leadership combined political action with military mobilization: in 1872 he ordered the uprising that sparked the Third Carlist War and took personal command of the insurgent forces. Despite episodes of advance, the final defeat of 1876 forced him into exile and prompted a transformation of Carlism, which gradually shifted from insurrection toward parliamentary activity.

Even in exile — living in France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Mexico and finally settling in Venice — Carlos maintained influence over the movement, appointing representatives and attempting to reconcile rival currents. He died in Varese in 1909 and was buried in Trieste. His significance lies in having crystallized the conservative profile of Carlism, being the most prominent claimant of that line in the period.
