Philip of Bourbon and Farnese was an infante of Spain who became Duke of Parma in 1748, founding the House of Bourbon-Parma. Born at the Madrid court, he was the son of Philip V and Elisabeth Farnese, whose ancestry tied him to the former rulers of the duchy. His accession to the government of Parma resulted from the territorial rearrangements after the War of the Austrian Succession and the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which transferred the territory to the Bourbon family through the intervention of European powers. As sovereign, Philip supported a modernizing administration led by the minister Guillaume du Tillot: he strengthened the state apparatus, introduced reforms in education and the university, and promoted policies that brought Parma closer to Enlightenment ideas while distancing it from more traditionalist practices. This push transformed the capital into a notable intellectual center in 18th-century Italy. His personal life reflected the dynastic alliances of the time: he married Princess Louise Élisabeth of France, a union that reinforced ties between Bourbon courts. He died in 1765, leaving a dynastic legacy that made him an ancestor of important branches of European royalty and consolidated the presence of the Bourbons on the Italian Peninsula.
