Vittorio Amedeo I was Duke of Savoy and sovereign of the Savoyard state from 1630 to 1637. Born into a line that maintained ties with the courts of Spain and France, he consolidated his position through marriage to Maria Cristina of Bourbon, sister of Louis XIII, which brought the duchy closer to French policy at a time of intense rivalry among Italian powers.

During his short reign he sought to restore the duchy’s military capacity: he expanded and professionalized the artillery, founded a specialized school, and raised the standing force to about 20,000 men—measures aimed at defending regional interests and countering Spanish threats. In diplomacy he signed agreements that reflected a delicate balance of concessions and territorial gains, notably the treaties of Cherasco (1631).

On the battlefield he took part in anti‑Spanish operations supported by Richelieu, winning successes in campaigns such as Tornavento and Mombaldone (1636–1637). He died suddenly in 1637 in circumstances suggestive of food poisoning, leaving his wife as regent for their underage son. His legacy included a strengthened Savoyard army and a pro‑French orientation that would shape the dynasty’s policy in the following decades.
