Vittorio Amedeo II (1666–1732) was Duke of the House of Savoy from 1675 until his abdication in 1730 and became king, first of Sicily (1713–1720) and then of Sardinia (1720–1730). His political conduct, distinguished by notable diplomatic skill, balanced interests between France and the Habsburgs, resulting in increased dynastic prestige and the elevation of the House of Savoy to a royal crown. The Treaty of Utrecht (1713) confirmed his gains, although the difficulty of holding Sicily led him to exchange it for Sardinia in 1720.

Domestically, he promoted administrative and fiscal reforms: he created the Council of State (1717), ordered legal codes (1723) and advanced the land cadastre (1730), contributing to the centralization and modernization of Savoyard government. He also secured, at least temporarily, greater religious toleration for the Waldensians, ending persecutions within his jurisdiction.

His reign laid the territorial and institutional foundations that would help form the core of the future Italian state. He abdicated in 1720 in favor of his son and, after an attempt to regain power, spent his final years secluded in the Castle of Rivoli.
