Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe‑Coburg and Gotha, was the fourth and last duke of Saxe‑Coburg and Gotha (1900–1918), a figure whose life reflected the tension between his British origins and his career in Germany. A grandson of Queen Victoria, he was born a British prince and inherited ducal and royal titles in childhood, taking full control of the duchy in 1905 while under strong influence from the imperial German court. World War I deepened his conflict of loyalties: having sided with Germany, he was stripped of British honours and forced to abdicate in 1918. In the interwar years he drew closer to authoritarian currents, taking part in nationalist movements and joining the Nazi Party in 1935, holding posts in the SA and serving in the Reichstag. Under Nazism he presided over the German Red Cross and the Anglo‑German Friendship Society, roles that tied him to the regime and provoked controversy about his public role. After World War II his reputation and legacy were marked by that political allegiance, as well as by ruptures with family and with the British dynastic tradition.
