Bernhard II, Duke of Saxe-Jena, was a German noble of the Ernestine line who ruled the duchy of Jena in the second half of the 17th century. A son of Wilhelm, Duke of Saxe-Weimar, he was noted for his education at the University of Jena and for diplomatic missions to France, where he attached himself to the court of Louis XIV and married Marie Charlotte de la Trémoille in 1662.
Bernhard’s private life was marked by a protracted marital crisis and by a controversial relationship with Maria Isabel von Kospoth. After promises and financial arrangements, he entered into a second wedding ceremony with Maria Isabel, becoming one of the few European princes accused of bigamy; that union brought him imperial favors, the emperor granting Maria Isabel and the couple’s daughter imperial titles.
On the dynastic front, the duchy’s succession was troubled by high infant mortality: only one son lived long enough to succeed him, Johann Wilhelm, who died young. The episode exemplifies the marital and political dilemmas of the small courts of the Holy Roman Empire, and the way international prestige intersected with family interests in princely lines.
