Ernst August II Constantine was Duke of Saxe-Weimar and Saxe-Eisenach in the mid-18th century. The son of Ernst August I, he became the surviving heir and assumed the title while still young after his father's death, in a context in which regencies and aristocratic guardianship shaped the governance of the small German states. His education and formation were influenced by princes and courts of the region — notably the Duke of Saxe-Gotha — and, once in power, he appointed Count Heinrich von Bünau as chancellor, delegating administration during absences and because of health problems. He married Anna Amalia of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel; the marriage played a decisive role in ensuring the dynasty’s continuity and produced two children, among them Charles Augustus, who would become an important figure decades later. Ernst August’s premature death, while still young, brought about the long regency of his wife Anna Amalia, a period that would shape Weimar culturally and politically in the following decades. His brief reign is remembered chiefly for securing the succession and for initiating a phase of government that had a lasting impact on the duchy.
