Friedrich Wilhelm I, Duke of Saxe-Weimar, was a German noble of the late 16th century whose political career unfolded through regencies and ducal government. The eldest son of Johann Wilhelm and Dorothea Susanna of Simmern, he inherited the title while still a minor and saw the duchy administered by a regency in which Elector Augustus of Saxony played a dominant role to the detriment of his mother. Declared of age in 1586, Friedrich Wilhelm began to govern Saxe-Weimar independently. In 1591 he received a significant public responsibility when he was appointed administrator of the Electorate of Saxony during the minority of the new elector Christian II, a post that required him to reside in Torgau and to focus on the affairs of the electorate. His stay overseeing Saxon administration meant that the daily affairs of the duchy were managed by his brother John, under the norms of the Ernestine line. In 1601, with the end of the regency in Saxony, Friedrich Wilhelm returned to Weimar, where he died the following year, leaving a relatively modest political record and no striking legacy. Married twice, he left numerous descendants, among whom ducal branches of consequence emerged in the following decades. His biography reflects the complex dynastic networks and regency practices typical of the German states of the period.
