Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany, was a British prince of the House of Hanover, the third son of the Prince of Wales Frederick and the younger brother of King George III. Born in London, he was best known for his naval career during the Seven Years’ War, taking part in operations off the French coast and serving as captain of HMS Phoenix. He was later promoted to rear admiral, vice admiral and, in 1766, Admiral of the Royal Navy. Having been granted the titles Duke of York and Albany and Earl of Ulster in 1760, he briefly stood as heir presumptive until the birth of George III’s son in 1762. He was also a member of the Privy Council and joined the Freemasons in 1765. Regarded in London society as affable and easygoing, his premature death in 1767, which occurred at the Prince of Monaco’s palace while he was travelling, cut short a promising naval career. He was buried in Westminster Abbey and is remembered as a representative of the generation that upheld dynastic stability at the start of George III’s reign.
